Terence F. Barlow, Ed.D., age 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from complications following a heart attack.
Terry was the son of the late Florence and James Barlow. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Jo-Anne Barlow; his daughter, Erin (Adam) DeSantis; and the joy of his life, his granddaughter, Pippa Morgan DeSantis. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Colleen and Scott Pariseau, and Nancy and Jim Kinane, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Terry was a man of integrity, wisdom, and quiet strength. He was a role model to his family and to the many students and colleagues whose lives he shaped over a lifetime in education. A devoted lifelong learner, he graduated from Greece Olympia High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Plattsburgh, and went on to receive both his master’s degree and Doctor of Education from SUNY Albany.
He began his career as a science teacher in the Voorheesville Central School District, where he would go on to serve as science department chair, vice principal, and principal. Deeply committed to his community, he led the district’s summer recreational program for many years, served as advisor to the Key Club, and was an active member of Kiwanis. He later served as vice principal at Guilderland High School and concluded his distinguished career as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Development at the East Greenbush Central School District.
Despite his many accomplishments, Terry never sought the spotlight. He was a kind, steady presence, someone who checked in, reached out, and made sure others were okay. He was a loyal and thoughtful friend who took great joy in maintaining connections and organizing gatherings for Delta Kappa Delta Fraternity alumni.
Terry had a quick, understated wit and a deep curiosity about the world. He loved history, genealogy, and trivia, and he was always both a teacher and a student of life. He was known for his jokes, often delivered with a smile, even if the punchline occasionally went missing. He also had a love of folk music and a deep appreciation for time spent with those he cared about most.
Terry and Jo-Anne especially treasured their years of traveling together, with their annual winter trips to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, holding a special place in their hearts.
A celebration of life will be held this summer. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Delta Kappa Delta Plattsburgh College Foundation, 101 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901. Please indicate “DKD Endowment” in the memo line. In honor of Terry’s life, please consider doing something kind for someone else.
