Rita A. Erfurt (Gourlay), 72, of Josephine, Texas, beloved wife of Scott Erfurt, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 29, 2026, with her family by her side.
Born on October 13, 1953, in Albany, New York, Rita was the daughter of the late Arnold and Margaret Koeppel Gourlay.
Rita graduated from Colonie Central High School in Albany, New York, with the Class of 1971. Throughout her husband’s military career, the family relocated many times before eventually settling in Abilene, Texas, where they made their home for many years. There, Rita devoted 20 years of service to the Abilene State School, working with individuals with disabilities. She and Scott raised their children in Abilene before retiring and moving to the Dallas area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Rita had a gift for solving Sudoku puzzles and loved her trips to the casino, where she seemed to be a winner more often than not. She also enjoyed visiting local farmers markets, cooking, and hosting gatherings for family and friends. Though soft-spoken by nature, Rita was known for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.
Rita is survived by her devoted husband of many years, Scott Erfurt; her daughter, Renee Jordan and her husband, Donrell, of Royse City, Texas; her son, Scotty Erfurt and his wife, Hillary, of Rowlett, Texas; four granddaughters, Rylee, Reese, Micah, and Jerzee; and one grandson, Tyler.
She is also survived by her sister, Patti Mueller of New York; her many cousins, as well as several nieces and nephews; she will be especially missed by Marion and Richie Garhartt. Rita shared a particularly special and loving bond with her godson and nephew, Dougie, of New York.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Naze; brother-in-law, Jerry Naze; and nephew, Richard Naze, all of New York.
No funeral services will be held at this time. Rita will be laid to rest at the Dallas–Fort Worth National Cemetery at a later date.
Rita will be remembered for her kindness, devotion to her family, quiet strength, and the love she shared with all who knew her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
