Colonie - Luigi Rotella, 60, passed away peacefully on October 21. 2026.
Luigi is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Ciampi; his daughter, Lena Bucher (Greg); his stepchildren, Chad (Amanda), Kevin (Heather), and Kristina; his beloved grandchildren, Emma, Christopher, and Jameson; his mother, Michelle Normandin; his sister, Elena; and his cherished cat, Milo. He was predeceased by his son, Phillip, and his father, Filipo.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Luigi moved to Albany as a young boy and spent the rest of his life there. He spoke English, French, and Italian and built a career as a skilled mason. He established his own business, Luigi Rotella Construction, taking great pride in his craftsmanship and hard work. A natural problem-solver, he could fix just about anything. Known for his big and generous heart, Luigi was always willing to lend a hand and put others first. He especially enjoyed mentoring younger generations of masons.
His talents extended beyond masonry. Luigi had a lifelong love of cooking, which began when he was a young boy learning his way around Italian kitchens. He continued to find joy in preparing meals and bringing people together through food. He also loved gardening, making his own wine, playing the accordion, and spending time with his pets.
Some of Luigi’s happiest memories were made at Loon Lake. During the winter, he eagerly counted down the days until camp opened for summer. He loved relaxing on his porch, enjoying the fresh air, catching up with friends and neighbors, and spending time with Karen. Loon Lake was more than a summer retreat for Luigi; it was a place of connection, comfort, and happiness.
Above all, Luigi’s greatest love was his family. His wife, Karen, was his rock, standing by his side with unwavering love and support. His daughter, Lena, was his pride and joy, and his love for his son, Phillip, remained deep and enduring. Phillip’s loss left an ache in Luigi’s heart that never faded. He carried his memory always, and his love for his family shone through in the time he shared with them and the memories they created together.
Luigi will be remembered as a devoted family man, gifted craftsman, and generous friend. His humor, kindness, and unmistakable spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be forever loved, forever missed, and always remembered as “The Legend”.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Luigi’s dear friend John Coppola, Karen’s friend Pam Katzman, and The Community Hospice team of Albany for their kindness and support during this difficult time.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Luigi’s family on Tuesday morning from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave., Colonie. A prayer service will be held at 12:00 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 310 S.
