Joel Fatato, 74, passed away suddenly on Monday, February 23, 2026. Born in Schenectady, he was the oldest son of the late Ralph Fatato Sr. and Ruth Fatato.
Joel is survived by his beloved children, Maria (Dan) D’Amelia, Christopher (Keri) Fatato, his adored grandchildren, Dominick and Juliana, his brothers John (Anne) and Ralph Jr. (Tammy), his former spouse Judy Fatato, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and members of the extended D’Amelia family.
In addition to his parents, Joel is predeceased by his brother Paul Fatato and several aunts and uncles.
Joel enjoyed a distinguished 46-year career at Hudson Valley Community College. He began in 1971 as a work-study student and rose through the ranks from account clerk and financial analyst to assistant comptroller, comptroller, and chief fiscal officer. In 2000 he was promoted to Vice President for Finance, where he oversaw the college’s operating budget and played an instrumental role in the development of Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. He retired in 2017, leaving a legacy of dedication and service to the college community.
A devoted family man, Joel cherished time with loved ones and enjoyed traveling — particularly cruises and trips to the Outer Banks. Closer to home, he could often be found on the golf course or at the bowling alley, where he led several leagues and formed many lasting friendships. He was also active in his local church community.
