Listen to Obituary

Jane Marie Briggs, 71, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026, leaving behind a life filled with connection, care, and a deep sense of purpose. She was born on January 22, 1955, in Manhattan, New York, to Bernard Rivkind and Elaine (Greenblatt).

Jane graduated from Syosset High School in 1973 and went on to attend SUNY Albany, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Communications in 1977.Her studies in communications led her into a career in public service and media. She worked for many years with the New York State Education Department and also spent time as a reporter for a local Albany radio station. She later served as Communications Director for the Public Employees Federation in Latham, where she supported the work of the union and its members.

Jane lived fully and with intention. She loved her friends deeply and centered her life around her family. She especially cherished time with her grandchildren, attending all of Jackson’s baseball games and many of Bella’s taekwondo practices and testing events. She was a constant and loving presence in our family’s everyday life.

When Julien was born, she spent weeks in Jersey City helping care for her newborn grandson, and she returned often—spending many weekends with Ian and Julien. She treasured the family trips when all of her grandchildren were together.

Jane was an avid reader and a proud member of two book clubs, always eager to share a story or recommend her next great read. She found joy in simple, meaningful moments—watching her favorite television shows, attending Broadway performances, and staying active through Zumba, yoga, and her walking club. She was a loyal Yankees fan who looked forward to summer, the beach, and any opportunity to enjoy a good brunch, especially when it meant time with her daughter, Allie.

At her core, Jane was a caretaker. She gave of herself freely, always showing up for the people she loved. That care was perhaps most deeply felt in the way she cared for her mother, affectionately known as “GG.” She did so with patience, love, and quiet devotion.

In addition to her parents Bernard and Elaine, Jane was predeceased by Oscar “Russ” Gainor, known lovingly as Grandpa Russ, and her beloved cats, Jeter and Lenny.

She is survived by her children, Allie (Scott Welfel) Briggs and Brandon (Kate) Briggs; her cherished grandchildren, Ian and Julien Welfel, and Isabella and Jackson Briggs; her brother, David Rivkind; her nieces, Brittany and Brooke; and her loyal dog, Addie. She will also be deeply missed by her dear friends. Her “Syosset Girls,” her book club, her new friends at Hamilton Parc, and the many lifelong friendships she held so close.

Jane was a guiding light to so many. She had a way of making people feel cared for and supported. Her presence was comforting, and the way she showed up for others was steady and genuine. She leaves behind a legacy not only in the work she did, but in the way she lived, showing up for others, again and again, with an open heart.
