Albany - Emmett Hudson Ferris, affectionately known to his loved ones as “Poopie,” passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 6:38 am at Saint Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York. He was 74 years old.
Born on March 14, 1951, in the Bronx, Emmett was the beloved son of Emmett Rivers and Betty Ferris. He graduated from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in 1969 and went on to study at SUNY Plattsburgh, completing two years of college before beginning his career in public service.
Emmett dedicated his professional life to the New York State Department of State in Albany, where he worked as a Community Program Analyst. His work reflected his deep commitment to people and community.
Outside of work, Emmett lived life fully and with passion. He was an avid runner who completed six marathons—twice in New York City, as well as in Honolulu, San Diego, Myrtle Beach, and Las Vegas. He had a magnetic stage presence and performed in a wide range of theatrical productions including Fences, Seven Guitars, Trouble in Mind, Camp Logan, We the People, The Whipping Man, Driving Miss Daisy, The Wizard of Oz, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, King Midas, and The Fighter, among others. Whether acting, running, or singing karaoke, Emmett brought energy and authenticity to everything he did.
Emmett was predeceased by his parents, Emmett Rivers and Betty Ferris, and his older brother Richard “Bo” Ferris.
He is survived by his beloved aunt “Muggy”; his four children, Tyrone Quarry, Emesia Quarry, Connor Ferris, and Annabella Davey; and his cherished grandchildren, Rianna Weeks, Tyler Quarry, Jackson Quarry, Nicholas Quarry, Joshua Quarry, Ava Ferris, Ezra Ferris, and Wyatt Davey. He is also remembered fondly by his nieces Kai Anderson and Stacey Ferris, and nephews Scott and Keith Ferris.
A visitation and service will be held on Wednesday, July 2, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave., Colonie. Emmett will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery at 11:45 a.m.
