Berne - Daniel P. O’Connell, 72 years young, of Berne, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 27th. Dan was born on September 11, 1952 in Albany, NY and was the beloved son of John and Margaret (McCauley) O’Connell. He is survived by Cookie (Marsteller), his wife of 45 years, his children, Meghann (Nate Hardymon), Caitlin (Neil Cranker), Danny and Sean, as well as his sisters, Jean and Joan, and sister-in-law, Susan. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Cailie, Cori, Liam, and Quinn, who affectionately called him Pop-Pop. Dan has many family members and friends that will miss him dearly. Dan was predeceased by his parents, sister Christine, brother John, and infant son, Liam.
Dan graduated from Christian Brothers Academy and earned an associate’s degree from Hudson Valley Community College. He traveled throughout the US and its territories as an inspector when federal disasters were declared. Dan was well-known for his business O’Connell Brothers Plumbing and Heating. He was skilled in many areas, and he was generous with his time and knowledge.
Dan was a shining light to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was an avid reader and outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, and he was passionate about traditional archery. Dan was a proud member of the West Albany Rod and Gun Club, the Mohawk Hudson Traditional Archers and was previously a member of the Robinwood Hunting Club in Long Lake. Dan’s annual trips to Pennsylvania to attend the Eastern Traditional Archery Rendezvous brought him great joy.
Most of all, Dan loved making people happy. He was the best storyteller, and boy did he make people laugh. The stories and words of wisdom he shared will be treasured by all. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He looked forward to his birthday seafood boils, family gatherings, and having archery competitions with his grandson. Throughout the years, Dan loved animals, especially his dogs. He was often found at the BKW track with his golden retriever at his side.
Visitation for Dan will be held on Monday, June 2nd from 3:00-7:00pm at Cannon Funeral Home (2020 Central Ave, Colonie, NY 12205).
