Neal Higgins

Port Charlotte, FL - Neal Higgins, 91, of Port Charlotte, FL., passed away peacefully at Englewood Community Hospital, Englewood, FL. on Saturday, September 22, 2018.

He was born in Hunter, New York, the son of Nelson and Jeanette (Armbruster) Higgins. He graduated from Hunter-Tannersville High School and served in the United States Navy from Apr.1945 to Nov.1947. In Dec.1947 he started a career of 39 years with the General Electric Co., Schenectady, N.Y. and retired from the Knolls Atomic Power Lab, Niskayuna, N.Y in Dec.1986. Neal enjoyed 32 years of retirement spending time at his summer home in Hunter, N.Y. and his winter home in Port Charlotte, FL. He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing and hunting, golfing and traveling to many of American’s National Parks.

Neal is survived by his wife of 69 years Gertrude (Russell) Higgins and his three children. Daughter, Sharon Andres (Alan) of Rotonda West, FL., son, Gary Higgins (Elaine) of Lake Luzerne, N.Y., and son, Michael Higgins (Stacy) of Ballston Lake, N.Y.  Three grandchildren, Sarah Higgins Norman, Matthew Higgins and Leah Higgins. One brother, Allen Higgins, whom predeceased Neal and a half-sister, Arwilda Morris. One niece, two nephews and many cousins.

A Memorial Service for Neal will take place on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 11 AM at Awaken Church, 935 Balltown Rd., Schenectady, N.Y. 12309. A reception will be held following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children Springfield, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA. 01104.
